What is Sterilization Wrap?
The use and storage of surgical instruments require absolute sterility. This maintains the control and spread of infection. Also, it has been used for over 150 years as a microbial barrier. This protects patients in surgery and clinical treatment.
Furthermore, patient health and potential for infection must be prevented. Infection could be the result of contact contamination, and cross contamination of instruments. The microbial contaminants which compromise these instruments must be minimized at all costs.
Muslin cloth was used as a sterilization wrap back as the mid 1800’s, because it was cheaply made, reusable and absorbent. But, it provided a rudimentary way to keep instruments and trays clean. However, it was ineffective against providing sterile protection because of its permeable nature.
In the mid 20th century, utilized cellulose came into existence with new advances. This provided better protection from microbial contamination. But, it still lacked tensile strength.
